Today is Diwali, ‘festival of light’ for Hindu’s around the world and is one of the most important celebrations of the year.
Over the past fours years, I have been lucky enough to have unique access to the Asian African community in Kenya. The country has one of the largest migrations of Asians in Africa.
The population is estimated to be around one hundred thousand, many of whom are fifth generation Kenyan. Many outsiders simply lump together the community as ‘Asians’ and have no idea that the populace combines a plethora of different religions, sects and castes.
Day to day activities are still steeped in deeply-rooted cultural south Asian customs. The Asian African community in Kenya has flourished economically and remains increasingly dynamic both socially and politically. Many a time have I heard the line ‘ the Asian African’s are the backbone of Kenya’s economy’.
